South Beach Regional Fire Authority Announces Retirement of Fire Chief Dennis Benn
After over 23 years of dedicated service, Fire Chief Dennis Benn has announced his retirement from South Beach Regional Fire Authority (SBRFA), stating: “Words cannot express the gratitude I have for the opportunity and experiences I have had here at South Beach.” Chief Benn began his distinguished career, having a vision, a passion, and a desire to see SBRFA grow and develop into a more modern, effective, and efficient department. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, commitment, and exceptional service, having positively impacted the lives of thousands.

Chief Benn began his career with the City of Westport Fire Department in 2002. His dedication, skill, and leadership quickly set him apart, and he was promoted to Fire Chief in 2005. With the formation of the Regional Fire Authority in 2017, he became Battalion Chief, eventually returning to the role of Fire Chief in late 2018.
Chief Benn achieved many milestones in his career, a few of which are:
- Creating a Training Chief Position: This role ensures crews are better prepared for Fire/EMS incidents, enhancing readiness and response capabilities.
- Elevating Training Standards: Chief Benn implemented Washington State IFSAC certification, bringing a standard for firefighters to learn and demonstrate their professional competencies.
- Fostering a Culture of Service: Chief Benn emphasized the importance of selfless service, inspiring others to prioritize the needs of the community.
- Forged many community partnerships embodying our motto of “#BETTERTOGETHER.”
Chief Benn has been an extraordinary leader, mentor, and role model. His unwavering commitment to public safety and the well-being of the community has left a lasting impact on South Beach. Our department has “Never Been Better.”
Even in retirement, Chief Benn’s passion for service continues. After some well-deserved rest, he plans to volunteer, continuing to support the community he so greatly loves.
Chief Benn’s final day as Fire Chief will be January 31, 2025. At approximately 4:30 PM on that day, his remarkable career will conclude with a symbolic final ride in a fire engine, culminating in his heartfelt final sign-off. Our community is encouraged to line the route to honor Chief Benn and send him off with gratitude and love. Details of the route are as follows:
- Montesano Street S. (by the school)
- Continue onto E Dock Street
- Left onto Westhaven Drive
- Left onto Cove Ave/E CV St to Nyhus St.
- Right onto Dock Street
- Continue on to Montesano to 105
