Good Samaritan helps Police Officer subdue a suspect with a knife

There truly are great people that live on the harbor and this is one of those great stories. "The citizen without any concern for himself grabbed the suspect's hand with the knife and was able to knock the knife out of his hand."

On 12-27-17 about 1557 hours, an Aberdeen Police Officer was dispatched to the 2500 block of Simpson Ave to contact a juvenile with an outstanding warrant. A description of the juvenile was given to the officer and upon arrival in the area, he spotted the suspect in the bus stop. When the suspect saw the police officer, he started to quickly walk away. The Officer pulled around and contacted the suspect in a parking lot. The Officer asked the suspect his name and the suspect was evasive. The Officer asked for ID which he denied at first and then gave the Officer. The ID confirmed he was the suspect with the warrant. The suspect was advised that he was under arrest. The suspected stated "No" and tried to step away from the Officer, who then grabbed the suspect by the arm. The suspect resisted the officer and had to be taken to the ground. The Officer was on top of the suspect, who was actively resisting him, when he observed the suspect take a knife out of his jacket pocket with his other hand. The officer grabbed for the knife before the suspect could open it, but was unable to get the knife away from the suspect.

At that time, a citizen who was in the area, asked the officer if he needed help and the officer said that he did. The citizen without any concern for himself, grabbed the suspects hand with the knife and was able to knock the knife out of his hand. The suspect continued to fight the Officer and was grabbing items off the Officer's duty belt. With the citizens help, the Officer was finally able to get control and handcuff the suspect.

Once the suspect was handcuffed, the citizen advised the Officer that he had to catch the bus. He said his name as he was leaving to catch the bus, but in the confusion, the Officer couldn't remember his name. He left on the bus and a few minutes later, back-up Officers arrived on scene to assist.

The suspect was arrested on the warrant and advised of numerous new charges to be filed to include Assault on the Police Officer. He was booked and taken the Juvenile Detention Facility.
