ABERDEEN, Wash. — A traffic stop Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen led to the arrest of two convicted felons and the seizure of two firearms, body armor and approximately 72 grams of cocaine, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.

At approximately 3:27 p.m. on September 26, an Aberdeen Police officer monitoring traffic on South Boone Street observed a black 2006 Infiniti traveling 48 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. Police said the vehicle was also unlicensed and displaying an expired trip permit. The officer stopped the vehicle in the 1500 block of South Boone Street. 

The driver was identified as a 45-year-old Sumner resident, while the passenger was identified as a 33-year-old Auburn resident. A records check showed the driver had a suspended license and that both occupants were convicted felons. The driver was taken into custody without incident.

Police said that as the passenger exited the vehicle, officers spotted a high-capacity rifle magazine between his legs and the stock of a rifle in the back seat. Both occupants were transported to the Aberdeen City Jail, while the vehicle was towed to the Aberdeen Police Department and held while officers obtained a search warrant. 

During the booking process, officers reportedly discovered that the passenger was wearing the back portion of a ballistic vest.

After obtaining and executing the search warrant, officers searched the vehicle and located a semiautomatic rifle in the back seat. The front portion of the ballistic vest was found on the front passenger-side floorboard, and police said a 9mm firearm was located inside a compartment of the vest.

Officers also recovered approximately 72 grams of cocaine from the vehicle. 

Both individuals were booked into the Aberdeen City Jail on allegations of being felons in possession of firearms and possession of a controlled substance.

The Aberdeen Police Department says the investigation remains ongoing.
