Medical Emergency Leads to Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash Near Montesano

A fatal single-vehicle collision occurred Tuesday evening after a driver suffered a medical emergency while traveling on State Route 12 near Montesano, according to information released by authorities.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:46 p.m. on December 16, 2025, on eastbound SR 12 near the Devonshire Road exit (milepost 9–4). Investigators report the driver was traveling eastbound in the inside lane when the vehicle exited the highway onto the Devonshire Road off-ramp.

Authorities say the driver experienced a medical episode, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike an exit sign. The vehicle came to rest in the gore point between SR 12 and the off-ramp to Devonshire Road.

The driver, identified as 74-year-old Lance A. Fry of Montesano, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was transported to Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision, and no injuries to others were reported. Officials confirmed that drugs or alcohol were not factors in the incident.

The vehicle involved was a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, which sustained reportable damage. The cause of the collision has been listed as a medical episode.

The incident remains documented as a non-traffic fatal collision, and next-of-kin notifications were completed by hospital staff.
