Two people were injured Tuesday evening in a three-vehicle collision on U.S. 12 near Rochester that the Washington State Patrol says involved DUI and an illegal passing attempt.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:41 p.m. on September 1 on U.S. 12 just west of 183rd Avenue SW. According to the Washington State Patrol, one vehicle was traveling eastbound while two other vehicles were traveling westbound.

Investigators say the eastbound driver attempted an illegal pass and struck both westbound vehicles. Following the collision, the eastbound vehicle came to rest between the eastbound and westbound lanes. One of the westbound vehicles stopped on the eastbound shoulder, while the third vehicle came to rest on the westbound shoulder.

The highway was blocked for approximately one hour and 10 minutes while emergency crews responded and the scene was cleared. WSP lists the cause of the collision as DUI and illegal passing and indicates drugs or alcohol were involved.

WSP identified the driver of the first vehicle as 70-year-old Jeffrey D. Fleig of Mineral. He was injured and transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital. According to the press memo, Fleig faces a DUI charge.

The driver of the second vehicle, 47-year-old Jacob L. Hiers of Oakville, was also injured. The memo does not indicate that he was transported to a hospital.

The third driver, 37-year-old Jessica L. Hosie of Oakville, was not injured. All three drivers were reportedly wearing seatbelts.

The vehicles involved were a 2018 Ford Focus, a 2020 Nissan NV200 van and a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe. The Ford Focus and Nissan NV200 were listed as totaled, while the Hyundai sustained reportable damage.
