On November 19, 2018 at approximately 2:28 pm, Grays Harbor E911 received a 911 call from a woman at a residence in the 200 block of East King Street stating she was being assaulted. The dispatcher could also hear a male screaming in the background as well as sounds consistent with an assault.

The male in the call was also overheard making statements about someone being dead.

Several officers from the Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Cosmopolis Police Departments as well as the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded to the scene. During the minutes while officers were in route, the male made statements about wanting to kill other people.

Officers surrounded the residence and attempted to contact the occupants of the home.

At 2:35 pm, a male subject briefly exited the residence before apparently seeing the officers outside and quickly retreating back into the home. Officers continually tried to call the man out of the house and make contact with anyone in the home to determine what was happening inside.
While on the open E911 line, the male made numerous direct threatening comments to include: if you move, I’ll kill you.

Three minutes later, the man was heard telling everyone to get on the ground against the window. Officers became more and more concerned the incident could be turning into a barricaded, armed subject with hostages.

As the call continued, the man was heard saying: if I go to jail, I’ll kill you all. One minute later, the man suddenly exited the house into the garage holding a baseball bat in a position indicating he was intending to swing or hit someone with the bat.

Officers surrounding the home ordered the man to drop the bat several times, however he continued to advance on the officers stationed at the front of the residence. The man refused to comply with the orders of the officers.

Two Aberdeen officers deployed their Tasers as the man approached; one Aberdeen officer discharged his duty weapon at the suspect, but the suspect was not hit. The suspect fell to the ground and was handcuffed.

Other Aberdeen officers immediately entered the residence whereupon they located a 77-year old female deceased from obvious trauma caused by a knife. Although paramedics from the Aberdeen Fire Department had staged near the scene in case of injury, nothing could be done to save the female inside the home.

The initial investigation indicated the 77-year old female victim lived at the home with her 81-year old husband. The suspect is the victim’s 39-year old son. No one else was located inside the home.

The suspect was arrested for investigation of homicide under the domestic violence act and eventually booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail.

The Aberdeen Police Department has responded to this residence in the past. In January of this year, the agency arrested the son for violating a No Contact Order involving his mother. There was no order in place at the time of the homicide.

The Aberdeen Police Department requested the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office activate the Region III Critical Incident Investigation Team (CIIT) to investigate the homicide and officer involved shooting. This specialized team is comprised of investigators from the Grays Harbor, Mason, Thurston, Lewis, and Pacific County Sheriff’s Offices. Detectives from Hoquiam PD are also assisting the team.

As standard practice, the officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

On behalf of the members of the Aberdeen Police Department, our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic incident.
