As reported over the weekend by Grays Harbor Scanner from those who came to us with information the Washington State Department of Defense was detonating unspent unexploded ordinances from World War 2 along the Grays Harbor Coast. The detonation was happening out along the beach near Ocean City, north of Ocean Shores.
The Ammunition is said to have been buried as military personnel left the beaches back during and after WW2 as opposed to packing it up and removing it back to military bases. The ammunition corroded as well as fossilized in a rock-like substance from the sand may have been washed out into the ocean by winter beach erosion and then back onto the beach.

It has been said that this was discovered by a man who walking along the beach collected a bucket full of the items knowing what they were, and then opted to call and report what he found at a later time.
More of these items had been found along the beach and were gathered up for detonation by bucket fulls leading to a larger explosion than by one by one.
The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office says that they received multiple reports of military 20 mm anti-aircraft high explosive rounds being located in the North Beach area of Grays Harbor County.

The rounds are described as being 6-8 inches in length and 20mm in diameter. They have the resemblance of large rifle ammunition.
Many of these rounds have been located encased in a black rock or sludge matter. These rounds should be considered dangerous.
