Grays Harbor Scanner got this in Wednesday late afternoon in regards to an accident that had Hoquiam traffic snarled for a bit. More from Chief Jeff Myers;
On Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at approximately 10:53 AM, Hoquiam officers were advised of a newer red Camero traveling eastbound on Emerson Ave swerving all over the road. At one point, the citizen following the car indicated the driver had crossed into the oncoming lane and had almost caused a head-on collision.
Within moments, officers were advised the Camero had struck several parked cars in the 700 block of Simpson Avenue. The driver had reportedly exited the Camero and was stuffing items into a backpack in the trunk.
There was extensive damage to the red Camero as well as the two vehicles struck; the parked vehicles were not occupied.
Officers arrived at the scene and conducted field sobriety tests as the 27-year old Ocean Shores driver appeared to be impaired, although there was no sign of intoxicating liquor. The driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and transported to the Hoquiam City Jail.
A Washington State Patrol Trooper, trained as a state certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), responded to the City Jail to conduct an evaluation. Hoquiam officers then applied for and secured a search warrant for a blood test based on probable cause the driver was under the influence of heroin. A second search warrant was secured for the vehicle.

A blood sample was obtained and the driver was booked in the Hoquiam City Jail. A search of the vehicle yield drug paraphernalia and a syringe suspected to contain heroin.
Citizens should always call 911 to report dangerous drivers as officers suspect there are more and more people driving under the influence of drugs. Unfortunately, these drivers are more difficult to detect than drivers impaired by alcohol. Unfortunately, we seem to be typically finding the drug impaired drivers when they crash or cause a collision.
