The City of Aberdeen has announced that construction will begin in April on a major improvement project along the US 101 corridor, extending from the Chehalis River Bridge to the Cosmopolis city limits. The project was awarded in February to Reed Trucking & Excavating, Inc.
City officials say the improvements are designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and mobility for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit users traveling through the corridor.

Planned upgrades include:
• Construction of new sidewalk segments where gaps currently exist
• Installation of ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps
• Intersection bulb-outs to improve pedestrian visibility and reduce crossing distances
• High-visibility pedestrian crosswalks
• Buffered bike lanes while maintaining on-street parking
• Dedicated transit pull-out stops to improve traffic flow and rider safety
• A “road diet,” which will convert the current configuration from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction with a center two-way left-turn lane
A similar “road diet” was implemented locally during the downtown Market Street improvement project completed in 2015.
Funding for the project is primarily provided through approximately $2.1 million in federal and state grants administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board. Remaining construction costs will be covered by the City of Aberdeen’s Transportation Benefit District.
During construction, motorists should expect shoulder closures, lane closures, lane shifts along US 101, and temporary side street closures. Work is expected to continue through the summer, with completion tentatively scheduled for late fall.
City officials are asking for the public’s patience during construction and remind drivers and pedestrians to remain alert, watch for changing traffic patterns, and follow all posted construction signs and flagging personnel for safety.
