HOQUIAM, Wash. — A reported domestic violence incident involving a recklessly driven vehicle escalated into a high-speed attempt to evade police, a crash, and a foot pursuit Sunday evening in Hoquiam.

According to Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Salstrom, officers were first alerted at approximately 7:44 p.m. to a Chevrolet Impala being driven recklessly southbound on State Route 109 toward the Hoquiam city limits.

Shortly after the initial report, another caller told dispatchers the vehicle had stopped in the roadway and that a man was seen assaulting a woman and pushing her into the vehicle. The Impala then reportedly continued southbound at a high rate of speed.

Vehicle Reportedly Reaches More Than 100 MPH

Responding Hoquiam Police officers spotted the vehicle traveling eastbound on West Emerson Avenue at speeds exceeding 80 mph. Officers attempted to turn around and catch up to the Impala to initiate a traffic stop, but police say the driver continued accelerating.

The vehicle reportedly reached speeds exceeding 100 mph on Emerson Avenue, where the posted speed limit is 30 mph. Officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

Police say the driver then failed to negotiate the turn from Emerson Avenue onto Simpson Avenue. The Impala left the roadway and crashed into a dumpster and the wheelchair ramp at the Gravity School, the former Hoquiam School District administration offices.

Both the vehicle and wheelchair ramp sustained extensive damage.
