As Independence Day approaches, many families across Grays Harbor County are preparing for backyard barbecues, celebrations, and fireworks. Before lighting that first sparkler or mortar, it's important to know that fireworks laws vary depending on where you are.
While Washington State establishes minimum regulations for fireworks sales and use, many cities have adopted stricter local ordinances. In Grays Harbor County, residents should be especially aware that rules differ between unincorporated county areas and several cities.
Unincorporated Grays Harbor County
In areas of Grays Harbor County outside incorporated city limits, state fireworks laws generally apply.
Consumer fireworks may typically be discharged during the state-authorized dates and times unless additional emergency restrictions are put into place due to fire danger. Residents should always check for any current burn bans or emergency fire restrictions before using fireworks.

Aberdeen
Within the City of Aberdeen, the discharge of legal consumer fireworks is only permitted on private property and only on July 4, between 9:00 a.m. and midnight.
Only legal consumer fireworks, commonly referred to as "safe and sane" fireworks (Class 1.4G / U.N. 0336), may be used. Fireworks may not be discharged on public streets, parks, or other public property. Residents should always obtain permission from the property owner before using fireworks and ensure they are discharged in a safe, open area away from structures and dry vegetation.
Hoquiam
The City of Hoquiam allows the discharge of legal consumer fireworks (Class 1.4G "safe and sane" fireworks) during the following times:
- July 3: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
- July 4: 9:00 a.m. – Midnight
Fireworks may only be discharged with the permission of the property owner and should be used in a safe, clear area away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and other combustible materials. Residents are encouraged to have a water source nearby and to properly dispose of used fireworks by soaking them before discarding them.
Ocean Shores
Ocean Shores has some of the most unique fireworks regulations in Washington.
Personal fireworks are not allowed anywhere within the city itself. Instead, fireworks are only permitted on a designated section of the beach between the Damon Road beach approach and the Marine View Drive beach access.
The designated beach area is one of the state's largest public fireworks celebrations, attracting thousands of visitors every Fourth of July.
Visitors are reminded:
- Fireworks are only allowed within the designated beach area.
- Fireworks are prohibited on the dunes, city streets, parks, hotel decks, and residential properties.
- Please clean up all debris before leaving the beach.
Other Communities
Some communities within Grays Harbor County have even stricter regulations.
For example, the City of Westport prohibits consumer fireworks within city limits and on Westport beaches, with fireworks only allowed on certain beach areas outside city limits near Grayland.
Always verify the local ordinance if you're traveling to celebrate the holiday.
Fireworks Safety Tips
Local fire officials encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly:
- Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
- Never relight a "dud" firework.
- Only use fireworks on private property with the owner's permission.
- Dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before placing them in the trash.
- Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Help Keep First Responders Available
Every year, local fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and EMS crews respond to fires, injuries, and illegal fireworks complaints throughout the holiday weekend. By following local ordinances and practicing safe handling, residents can help reduce preventable emergencies and allow first responders to remain available for those who truly need assistance.
If you're unsure whether fireworks are legal where you're celebrating, check with your local city or county government before lighting the fuse.
Have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July, Grays Harbor!
